The Mudheads Are Going Green For The Third Consecutive Year

  • June 23, 2011

The Mystic River Mudhead Racing Association proudly announces that it has registered its annual Mudhead Benefit Race on July 16, 2011 as a certified Clean Regatta with the non-profit organization, Sailors for the Sea for the third consecutive year. By doing so, the Mudheads pledge thier commitment to clean waters and shores, and vows to fulfill and encourage others to fulfill the goals and requirements set forth by Sailors for the Sea.

These goals include disqualifying any boat that is observed discharging trash into the water, providing recycling containers on shore and encouraging their use, including a list of non-toxic cleaning products in each skipper’s packet, and keeping the shore clean of debris.Additionally, this year, we are implementing a system to decrease the use of plastic water bottles.

“We are committed to running our race as cleanly as we can,” said Bob Austin-LaFrance, Mudhead board member and past commodore. “By signing up as a Silver Level Clean Regatta, we hope to create a focus for sailors in southeastern Connecticut for keeping our oceans and shorelines healthy.”  Mudhead Race Committee Chairman, Greg Gilmartin, adds, “It’s common sense: no trash overboard, no discharging of waste, recycle your paper and cans, and have a good time on the water and at the party on shore.”

The Mudhead Benefit Race is a fundraiser for Hospice Southeastern Connecticut, a non-profit community-based organization that has been providing end-of-life care since 1985.
