Mystic Aquarium Releases Harbor Seal Tuesday

When the Mystic Aquarium releases Ares, a 4-month-old baby harbor seal into the ocean this morning, his send-off committee will include children in the Aquarium’s Sea School.

The children, ages 3 to 5, spent the last several weeks learning about the Mystic Aquarium’s animal rescue team, which rescues and releases marine animals like Ares.

The Maine Department of Marine Resources rescued the abandoned harbor seal pup on July 2, 2011. Ares, according to the , was transferred to the University of New England and then transferred to the Mystic Aquarium’s Seal Rescue Clinic for rehabilitation.

The Mystic Aquarium’s animal rescue team gave Ares a clean bill of health last week, clearing the way for him to be released at Blue Shutters Beach in Charlestown, R.I. today, at 9:30 a.m.
