Week In Review: Pizza Winner, Pet Names, Friendly’s
A Recap Of The Week’s Top Stories On Stonington-Mystic Patch
We announced the winner of the Groton and Stonington Food Fight this week. You told us Stonington Pizza Palace has the best pizza in Stonington and Groton. Thanks again to everyone who participated in our Food Fight, we’ll have another one in February, but in the meantime take a look at the Pizza Food Fight going on now in Waterford and New London. We don’t even mind they stole idea from us.
From pizza the conversation online this week moved to pets. We had two polls this week one on the most popular cat names of 2011 and one on the most popular dog names of 2011. Thank you to everyone who weighed in and uploaded photographs of their pets. Check back next week for a poll on the number of pets people own. We want to see group shots of all your pets.
It wasn’t all food and animals in Stonington, Mystic and Pawcatuck this week though. The town held a public discussion on the athletic fields and formed a task force that hopes to have a recommendation for the town within three months. The task force will have its own email address but while that is being set up First Selectman Edward Haberek Jr., is inviting anyone with thoughts, ideas, and concerns about the athletic fields to email him at selectmen@stonington-ct.gov.
The First Selectman is also hoping to get residents input on joining the Ledge Light Health District.
There were several police and fire news items this week. A grand jury convened this week to hear testimony on a case involving a Mystic man who died following an arrest by the Westerly Police. The Mystic Fire Department had an early start to their day when the Mystic Seaport’s facility and maintenance building caught fire Monday morning. No was hurt in the fire and none of the Seaport’s equipment was damaged but there was some smoke damage.
Several Friendly’s across the state and throughout New England closed this week, but the Mystic Friendly’s is still open.
We covered lots more this week and throughout the weekend, so search the site for other stories, follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest updates and check out our calendar to see what's happening next week in town.

Hopefully the Stonington Pizza Palace has seen an increase in business since it won the food fight. Nice free advertising!
