Best Westerly Hospital Memories, Anyone?

At midnight Friday, The Westerly Hospital, which new owners L+M say will keep its name, will be owned by the New London-based healthcare center.

At midnight Friday it will be official.

Westerly Hospital, which opened on August 17, 1925, will now be part of L+M. A spokesman for L+M said they are “committed” to maintaining the name, The Westerly Hospital.

The final documents needed for the closing of the deal transferring ownership were to be signed this afternoon by L+M President and CEO Bruce D. Cummings and Mark Russo, Special Master in charge of The Westerly Hospital. Others were slated to be in attendance including Ulysses B. Hammond, L+M Board Chair, medical staff and community leaders.

Four days after the hospital opened, on Aug. 21, 1925, the first birth was recorded: a boy, to Mr. & Mrs. Henry Clay Mason (looked for him; no luck). The day before the official opening, on Aug. 16, the first surgery was performed.

And while much of the hospital routine remains the same, it will no longer be a place for babies to be born. Speaking of that, were you born there? Or maybe your child? Tell us in the comments, please!
