Daily Five: Stonington Public Schools Is Hiring

Plus, a nice weather forecast, Old Lighthouse Museum opening day, summer jobs for teens, and the week's list of municipal meetings.

1. Our friends at the National Weather Service are calling for a high temp today of 61 degrees. 61. Give me a high five.

  • Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 61. West wind around 8 mph.
  • Tonight: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2am. Increasing clouds, with a low around 46. Southwest wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
2. The Old Lighthouse Museum will open for the season May 2, according to a press release from the Stonington Historical Society. The 1840 Lighthouse at 7 Water Street in Stonington Borough will be open to visitors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day except Wednesdays from May 2 through October 29. New exhibits include “Stonington Pride: the Battle of August 1814,” which showcases some of the Historical Society’s many artifacts connected to town’s role in the War of 1812. Some of the relics include a cannon ball embedded in hearthstone from a neighboring house, a spent Congreve rocket (one of many fired onto the village), a walking cane made from a cannon, and Olive Spicer’s sugar bowl and creamer carried away when she fled from the oncoming British. Admission, which includes a free pass to the Capt. Palmer House, is $9 for adults, $6 for children under 18, with a $25-maximum for parents with children. Special rates are also offered to seniors and active duty military. On Tuesdays, visitors may opt for the special rate of two for the price of one. The historical society unveiled plans last week for a major renovation.

3. If you are a teen (or know a teen) looking for summer employment, the Stonington High School Career Center Facebook page is a great resource. Right now, they have postings about jobs at Mystic McDonald’s, Stonington Country Club, Pequot Golf Club. They also have volunteer opportunities, including the 2013 Angel Ride.
