COMMUNITY MEMBERS KICKOFF THE FIGHT AGAINST BREAST CANCER IN NEW LONDON COUNTY
Inspirational event kicks off the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer©
New London, CT (October 1, 2012) — More than 50 community leaders, corporate employees, volunteers, and cancer survivors joined the American Cancer Society at Atria at Crossroads in Waterford to pledge their support to fight breast cancer. During an inspirational kickoff marking the beginning of the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer season, breast cancer survivors, local medical professionals, and American Cancer Society volunteers challenged the community to help make a difference in the fight to end breast cancer by getting involved in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of New London County on October 28th, 2012 at Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford.
As the American Cancer Society's premiere event to fight breast cancer, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a noncompetitive 3 mile walk that raises awareness and funds to help fight for every birthday threatened by breast cancer in every community. This year, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of New London County will be one of over 270 events being held across the country, and one of five being held in Connecticut.
Since 1993, 8 million walkers have raised more than $450 million to help save lives and create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays by helping people stay well, get well, find cures, and fight back. In 2012, the American Cancer Society is commemorating 20 years of saving lives through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and celebrating the more than 2.6 million breast cancer survivors who will see another birthday this year, thanks in part to Making Strides supporters.
"It doesn't matter who you are," said Elsie Melita, American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, Community Executive “Breast cancer touches everyone. At the Making Strides kickoff, we stood together to support this cause. We're energized, we're ready and come this October, we'll make strides to end breast cancer."
Key sponsors for the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of New London County include Dime Bank, Colliers International, Unicorr, and Q105.
