League of Women Voters of Southeastern Connecticut Celebrates 93rd Anniversary

On Thursday, Feb. 14, the League of Women Voters of Southeastern Connecticut celebrates the 93rd anniversary of the national organization’s founding. Formed as a “political experiment” shortly before the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the League aimed to help newly enfranchised women to exercise their responsibilities as voters. Since its inception in 1920, the non-partisan organization has grown to more than 800 state and local leagues, comprising both women and men, in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Our local League is proud to continue the League’s mission to encourage informed and active participation in government, increase understanding of major public policy issues and influence public policy through education and advocacy. During the past year, we conducted many activities and events to further these goals, including voter registration sessions, candidates’ forums and debates, and community presentations featuring state officials such as Secretary of the State Denise Merrill.

Our League is an affiliate of the LWV of Connecticut and the LWV of US. The LWV neither supports nor opposes any political party or candidate. For more information, visit sect.lwvconnecticut.org; to join the League, contact Marilyn Mackay at marilynmackay@mac.com or 860-535-1192.
