The National Commander of the Legion of Valor, Roger Dimsdale has announced that Mystic, Connecticut will be the site of the 121st reunion of the Legion of Valor from May 18 through May 22, 2011.
Organized in 1890 as the Medal of Honor Legion, the Legion of Valor is our Nation’s oldest Veteran Service Organization. Membership is offered to recipients of our country’s highest awards for valor in combat, The Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Navy Cross or the Air Force Cross. Membership is not based upon educational attainment, economic,or social status but is based solely on the heroism of the medal recipient. Currently, there are approximately 700 members, of which approximately over 100 will attend the event in May 2011.
The reunion will be headquartered at and in Downtown Mystic. Dimdale stated “Mystic” was chosen because of its New England charm and the fact that Connecticut is home to numerous veterans and is known to be a veteran friendly State. Additionally, many of the members have never been to New England and they are looking forward to the beauty and hospitality of the area.”
Activities of the reunion will include a cruise on the Mystic River, a lobster feast at Abbott’s Lobsters, and a full day at the Groton Submarine Base along with other activities from The Whalers Inn. A special memorial service honoring members who have passed away the previous year will be held at the Groton Sub Base Chapel. The final banquet will be held the evening of May 21, 2011 at the United States Coast Guard Academy Officer’s Club.
