Stonington Police Issue Scam Alert

The issued the following scam alert on Jan. 25, 2012:

Dear Residents and Businesses:

I have received information from Patrol that some of our residents are getting calls from someone professing to be a business. The caller is telling residents that they are from a local Oil Company and that they noted during their last delivery that the residents home was in need of chimney or furnace cleaning. They are asking for a credit card number in order to service the problem. The residents are calling their oil company and discovering that they never did call them about any issues. Please be aware of this scam attempt and speak to your oil company directly before responding.
