WESTERLY, R.I. (April 28, 2012): The Westerly Relay For Life is celebrating a milestone year, its 15th anniversary, making it the longest running Relay For Life in Rhode Island. This year we hope to bring our fundraising total to $3 million. To help reach this mark, we have made Relay For Life bigger and better than ever. Dedicated committee members and teams are working toward one common goal: Finding a Cure. This year’s Relay For Life event will take place on June 22 – 23 at the Westerly High School Track.
Relay For Life is kicking off this momentous year by bringing back a classic Relay event, the Road To Relay Street Fair, which will take place on Saturday, May 5, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Relay For Life is returning to its roots by encouraging everyone to Come Home to Relay and join in this community-wide event.
Relay teams will line the downtown sidewalks providing activities, crafts, gifts, food and more to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Come downtown and enjoy some great shopping- stained glass art, wooden roses, beaded bracelets and other handmade jewelry, container gardens, as well as foam visors and cozies. Check out the tag sale area with toys, books, DVDs, and house wares or get your spine checked. Take a chance on a beach or Mother’s Day basket or even on a 50/50 drawing! If you are hungry or just need a treat be share to stop by for Portuguese sweet bread, cupcakes, ice cream, hotdogs, chips, cake pops, mini pies and drinks. Bring the kids to experience the carnival games, face painting, “tattoo parlor”, cookie decorating, kid’s planting projects, arts and crafts, wooden building kits and balloons. Pick up your must-have Relay for Life swag and essentials at the Relay Store. Interested in signing up a team for Relay? Visit the Team Recruitment table. You can also purchase your luminaria bags to line the track at the Relay for Life Luminaria table. If you are a survivor, this is your chance to sign up for this year’s Relay. You can also get important information and nominate a loved one for the Courage Award.
In addition to the team booths, Jay’s Music Service will be providing music for all to enjoy and “Alice in Wonderland” will be walking around from 10-12 courtesy of Simply Enchanted.
Another beloved Westerly tradition - Paint The Town Purple will kick off on May 5. Participating merchants have decorated their storefront windows purple to raise awareness for Relay For Life. Everyone will have the opportunity to cast their vote for their favorite window and the winning merchant will get their name on Relay t-shirts.
