HS Seniors Art Festival Held at Goodwin College

On April 6, 2014, the General Federation of Women's Clubs of Connecticut (GFWC/CT) once again held this weekend event dedicated to the recognition of artwork completed by participating high school seniors.  Nine Federated Women's Clubs sponsored 12 high schools who contributed 185 entries.

Judging was done by practicing artists and professors:

Susan Kiss is currently a Museum Technician for Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven and is a member of the Windsor Art Center Curatorial Committee.  As an artist, she works with pastels, charcoal, graphite, Polaroid transfers, aqua-media monotypes and occasionally oil paints.  She has taught drawing and monotype classes at Manchester Community College Credit Free Program.

John Favret, Professor, Art Program Coordinator and Graphic Design Instructor at Housatonic Community College has an M.F.A. in Painting, attended RISD and received a certificate in Computer Graphics.  His work has been nationally exhibited.

Andy Pinto, Professor of Fine Arts and Digital Graphics at Housatonic Community College and graduate of the University of Hartford Art School and Fairfield University.  He has lengthy experience in the production of high end advertising as well as a series of paintings on display in the mayor's office in Bridgeport.

A reception was held at the College Community Room on Sunday, April 6th from 12 - 4 pm for family, friends, teachers and the public to view the students' work.  Awards were given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in all categories plus a Best in Show and an Honorable Mention for exceptional work.  Kirsten Valade of Newington won Best in Show for her charcoal drawing as well as a 1st in acrylic painting.  Monetary awards are based on donations and club fund raisers in many communities throughout Connecticut.  GFWC/CT is a volunteer service organization dedicated to many communities since 1897 and is a member of the International Organization, the General Federation of Women's Clubs with headquarters in Washington DC.  For a list of the awardees and participating schools and sponsoring local clubs, please call Sharon Stryker or email her at StrykerCT@gmail.com.
