Daily Five: Give Blood

Five things to know for Friday, Feb. 22, 2013.

1. Mel’s Downtown Creamery is hosting a blood drive today from 4 to 7 p.m. Everyone who gives blood will receive a free pint of ice cream.

The Red Cross website offers a search option for interested donors to find upcoming blood drives in their area.

2. How does a fish fry sound for lunch or dinner? The B.F. Hoxie Engine Company runs a fish fry at the Mystic Fire Department on Fridays between 5 and 8 p.m. Each Friday through March 29, at the Holy Ghost, fish and chips begin at noon and go to 7:30 p.m. And at St. Edmund’s Retreat at Enders Island the Lenten Fish Fry is in conjunction with the annual Stations of the Cross. Fish fry dinners take place at 5 p.m. and at 6:30 p.m.

3. Pick up fresh bread, cheese, vegetables, winter fruit and more at the Winter Stonington Farmers Market. The market takes place on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Stonington COMO.

4. Join the Eastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce and Regional Tourism Leaders for a business breakfast on tourism, today Friday, Feb. 22 from 7:45 to 9 a.m., at 20 Coogan Boulevard in Mystic. The breakfast is $17 for members and $25 for non-members.

5. If there's a young person doing great deeds in your neighborhood, and he or she is between the age of six and 18, nominate them for the Kohl’s Cares® Scholarship Program.

The program will distribute more than $420,000 in scholarships and prizes to young volunteers who work to improve their communities.

Nominees must be between the age of six and 18. Nominators must be at least 21. Nominations can be placed at kohlskids.com now through March 15.
