Sponner, a six-month-old female gray seal was released into the waters off Blue Shutters Town Beach.

The said a happy goodbye to a six-month-old female gray seal on Friday morning. Sponner swam off into the waters off of Blue Shutters Town Beach in Charlestown, R.I.

The Mystic Aquarium’s Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Stranding Team rescued Spooner in March of this year. She had numerous infected wounds on her face and neck and a fractured tooth. With treatment, which included wound care, antibiotics and dental surgery Spooner was ready to go to sea.

The seal is named in honor of Dr. Tracey Spoon a Mystic Aquarium research scientist who passed away unexpectedly in May.
