Exploring Vintage Stonington, Mystic And Pawcatuck

As the weather warms more and more people are appearing at Stonington Point. In this vintage photograph from the early 1900s the Point is all but deserted.

Provided by the Mystic Seaport and the Connecticut Historical Society this week’s photograph is described as view “…of Stonington Harbor. Two rock jetties can be seen.”  We can’t see it in the photograph by according to the seaport and historical society at the bottom of the photograph the words Along Shore at Stonington are written.

They believe the photograph was taken from what is now the duBois Beach area. The beach owned by the Stonington Village Improvement Association wasn’t established until 1960. According to the SVIA after purchasing the land for the beach over 500 truckloads of sand were carted in to create the beach. The beach was dedicated in memory of Coert duBois, a former President of the SVIA who started the process for securing a beach.
