If you’re like me you’ve probably driven by the big brick building on Greenmanville Avenue a thousand times.

Mystic’s Rossie Velvet Mill spreads out through Greenmanville Avenue, it’s red brick building visible from across the river.

The provided Patch with this postcard of the Rossie Velvet Mill. The building at 112 Greenmaville Ave., was built in 1898 the historical society said. Between 1902 and 1932, investors made four additions to the original building. According to the historical society a group of Mystic investors called the Mystic Industrial Company built the mill as a way to attract manufacturing to the village. A German company named Rossie originally called the mill home. Rossie manufactured fine velvet fabric, the historical society said.

Today the mill is part of the Rossie Velvet Mill Historic District, named after the mill. According to Living Places the Rossie Velvet Mill Historic District became part of the National Register of Historic Places in 2007 and includes 51 properties built between 1850 and 1950.
