The Emporium Closing: 'Mystic is Losing a True Treasure.' [UPDATED]

The shop sold unique and vintage gifts and artwork.

The nostalgia came fast and furious in the wake of the announcement earlier this week that The Emporium will close in early summer.

In a Facebook post Sunday, The Emporium, an eclectic staple on Water Street in Mystic, announced its closing.

The store first posted on Facebook April 6 an appropriately curious epitaph of "The Emporium: 1965-2013." Sunday, a posting appeared with a picture of a closing announcement that stated:

"Dear Patrons, Our Friends: The Emporium will be closing in early Summer, after having had the pleasure to serve you for the past 48 years. We invite you to use our Facebook page to share any stories or memories of our rich history together. With our warm thanks to you all!"

According to The Emporium Mystic CT Facebook page's "About" section, the building was built in 1859 and was restored in the mid-20th century by actor Lee Howard and artist Paul White.

Patch stopped by the store Wednesday morning but it is closed Monday-Wednesday. It reopens Thursday at 10 a.m.

The outpouring of grief on the Facebook page was immediate and profound:

Nell Moore Chevalier wrote "So sad to hear... The Emporium has been the place to go for cards, earrings, gifts and gags forever!"

Bob Rousseau wrote, "I remember the summer I worked at the Emporium in the early 80s with great fondness. I live in Seattle now and on a visit last Christmas, was pleased to show my wife the old stomping grounds. Best to you, Robert and Evan!"

Jerry Plaaten wrote, "Extraordinary individuals created an extraordinary establishment. It will be sorely missed."

George Ouimet wrote, "Best poster collection for miles, incense, and all sorts of fun stuff. I used to hitchhike there from Ledyard 35 years ago, very sad to hear about your closing!!!!"

Matt McLaughlin wrote: "Thank you for everything! I have so many childhood memories of the Emporium. Thank you especially for holding space for the irreverent and the absurd, the funny and the provocative. Mystic is losing a true treasure."
