As we nest into the fall/winter season there are several things we can do to bring more light and good spirit into our homes. Whether you are trying to sell, have decided to stay or just want to make some improvements without spending a lot of money, I am sharing some ideas that will hopefully inspire you.

This is the perfect time of year (before it gets too cold) to clean as many windows as possible throughout your home. The more light the better. If your window treatments are old or outdated, take them down. There are several inexpensive options for replacement. Pre-made shades, drapery panels and shutters are sold in many stores. Custom window coverings are also an option, especially if you are drawn to a special fabric that you can't live without. Things to consider are budget, style and functionality. Remember to use natural fibers whenever possible. Cottons and linens are my favorite!

You can create a beautiful kitchen without spending for a new one. Paint the cabinets if needed, change the hardware, knobs and hinges, and if affordable, update your countertops or backsplash.

A new faucet can be an inexpensive update and change the old style to one that is more current. Don’t forget the throw rug.... the one in front of the sink! There are indoor/outdoor area rugs available in great colors and patterns that work well for the high traffic areas. They are quite affordable, easy to clean and come in several different sizes so you can use them to freshen up any doorway or hallway in your house.

Painting is the least costly way to transform and invigorate any room. Changing the color scheme can be uplifting during the upcoming months. The addition of a new throw blanket and some new throw pillows to coordinate makes things fun and festive!

Adding a slipcover to an old sofa can really make a difference in the feel of that room. (Find slipcovers at shops like Target.)

Even a new furniture arrangement can liven things up. Look around your home and consider re-using those items you thought you’d never use again. Lamps are a great example—if you change the shade that lamp might take on a whole new look that now works somewhere else in your home you had never considered before.

Replace worn out towels, shower curtains and bathmats to perk up your bathroom. Tired of your vanity? Paint it and change the hardware. There are many How-To books detailing the process.

Remember, ALWAYS make your home an expression of YOU!
