Mandatory evacuations for are underway for parts of Mystic in both Stonington and Groton.
Stonington
On the Stonington side of the river a mandatory evacuation went into effect Sunday afternoon and the Stonington High School emergency shelter was preparing to open at 5 p.m.
“We are now implementing our recommended mandatory evacuation of low-lying areas in town,” Stonington First Selectman Ed Haberek wrote on his Patch blog. “Similar to other towns we are requesting individuals who live in imminent flood areas to mandatorily evacuate to the shelter or inland areas. Such areas include Stonington Borough, Lords Point, Latimer Point, Mason’s Island, parts of lower Mystic and Mechanic Street and River Road and Downtown Pawcatuck.
Members of the Red Cross and Stonington Human Services staff the emergency shelter at Stonington High School. The shelter will have meals. Pets in crates are allowed.

Groton
In Groton a mandatory evacuation in low-lying areas of town goes into effect at 7 p.m. According to the Groton Town Police in Mystic: Cedar Road, Willow Point, Fort Rachel Place, Gravel Street, Pearl Street, Grove Street, Eldridge Avenue, River Road, Elm Street South of Fishtown Road, Route 27, and North Stonington Road are under mandatory evacuation.
The emergency shelter at Robert E. Fitch Senior High School opened at 4 p.m. Here is a list of items the Red Cross is encouraging people to bring to the shelter:
- prescription and emergency medication
- extra clothing
- pillows
- blankets
- hygiene supplies
- flashlight with extra batteries
- small board games
- books for entertainment
- speciality snacks and juices for those with dietary restrictions
- basic snacks
- baby food and formula
- diapers
- beach chair or camp chair
- identification - including license and FPL or other utility bill
- insurance papers
- other comfort items
- Special items for children and infants, such as diapers, formulas and toys, should be brought, along with other items for family members who are elderly or disabled.
