PHOTOS: Cleaning Up After Hurricane Sandy

Tuesday was all about assessing the damage and beginning to clean

Even though 95 percent of Stonington Connecticut Light & Power customers were without electricity for much of the day, Tuesday, many thought Hurricane Sandy could have been worse.

“Hurricane Sandy has now gone through Stonington and we are in a recovery effort,” First Selectman Ed Haberek posted on his blog. “We sustained much damage and flooding but thank god no casualties.”

As residents and businesses assessed the damage most seemed to agree. At the Mystic Aquarium, which remained closed Tuesday, the aquarium wrote the animals were safe and sound.

Around Stonington, Mystic and Pawcatuck generators hummed and saws buzzed providing a background noise to those cleaning up.

“Sandy pushed water into the tackle shop,” Don’s Dock posted on their Facebook page. “But no real damage. Dodged a bullet no doubt!”
