Updated: Power Restored In Stonington

Transformer Fire In Rhode Island Caused Power Outages in Stonington, Groton And Ledyard

According to Connecticut Light & Power, Stonington customers saw their power fully restored around 11:30 a.m. At one point Monday morning as many as 10 percent of Stonington customers, a little more than 800 homes and businesses were without power.

A fire at a power station in Charlestown was the likely cause of the power outages in Stonington, southern Rhode Island, Groton and Ledyard.

The Westerly Sun and The Day, reported a transformer malfunction caused a fire at a power station in Charlestown.

National Grid spokesman David Graves said several sub stations throughout Rhode Island were affected knocking out power to 20,000 customers including most of Westerly. National Grid had power restored to all their customers within two hours of the incident.

While National Grid, not CL&P served those customers; CL&P spokesman Mitch Gross said a problem with an electric transmission line, on the Rhode Island side caused the outages to CL&P customers.

Residents throughout Stonington began reporting the power outages Monday morning around 9 a.m.

Patch Regional Editor noticed power was out in Pawcatuck from about the to downtown Pawcatuck around 9:30 a.m.

On Facebook users reported flickering lights throughout town including at . Power stayed on at and on Moss Street in Pawcatuck. in downtown Pawcatuck, however, lost power.
