Safe Futures Radiothon Taking Place This Week

Proceeds from annual Men Against Domestic Violence event to benefit Safe Futures

An annual radiothon to benefit Safe Futures will begin this week to kick off the organization's Men Against Domestic Violence campaign.

From 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Jan. 25, Hall Radio hosts will discuss topics with guests including law enforcement officers, victim advocates, survivors of domestic violence, and educators. Topics will include the work done by Safe Futures to serve men, women, and children affected by domestic violence; survival stories; how residents can make a difference; and the impact of domestic violence on the community.

Hall Radio is sponsoring the event and the radiothon will run on its stations: WCTY 97.7, WNLC 98.7, and WICH 1310 AM. Listeners may call in at 860-886-1515 to to make tax-deductible donation to Safe Futures. Donations may also be made online at safefuturesct.org.

The Men Against Domestic Violence campaign invites men and boys in the region to take a pledge against all forms of violence against women. Donors during the radiothon may ask that their name by added to the "1,000 Men Campaign," which will list the names of people who have taken this pledge in a Father's Day advertisement in The Bulletin and The Day.

Safe Futures serves the communities in New London County and works with people affected by domestic and sexual violence by operating two 24-hour emergency hotlines, an emergency shelter, and a transitional living program. Other activities include legal assistance, education and counseling, and support groups.

The organization says its 2012 activities included:

  • Assisting 131 women and children in the Genesis House, the organization's safe house
  • Helping 16 households with its Phoenix House transitional living program
  • Educated over 3,500 students in its violence prevention education programs
  • Reopened its Norwich counseling office, located in Backus Hospital, on Mondays and Fridays
