Week In Review: $2 Million Dollar Man, World Series Girls And Ospreys

A Recap Of This Week's Top Stories In Stonington-Mystic Patch

What a week.

First, the Pawcatuck Senior Little League Softball All-Stars are in Delaware today after in the Eastern Regional’s for a berth in the Senior Little League World Series – the team’s second trip; they finished fifth in 2007. Larry Kelley has done a great job covering the series and keeping us connected. We couldn’t be happier for the All-Stars -- go girls!

Happy too must be Joseph Collins of Mystic. The 23-year-old Navy Marine Fleet Corpsman, who recently completed a tour of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, purchased CT Lottery scratch-off ‘Big Money’ tickets at the Mystic Mobil and ! Patch spoke to clerk Johnny Vohra who said Collins purchased multiple tickets and won on two others; $100 and $20. When Collins saw he won on a third, he asked Vohra to check it. "I told him it was $2 million. He couldn't believe it.” Lucky guy.

We also checked in this week with the at the junction of Routes 1 and 1A. There’s something pretty thrilling about watching these birds of prey. We hope you get a chance to check them out.

On another front – all things government, Stonington-Mystic Patch wrote about: State Sen. Diana Urban’s – signed into law Friday by Gov. Dannel Malloy – that requires the state emergency preparedness agency make contingencies specifically for children in the event of a disaster or act of terrorism; the state DMV decided the Old Saybrook branch on Aug. 11 as planned, though its future is still uncertain and locally, the town and schools are a step closer to that would allow sponsor advertising on sports scoreboards at the high school in an effort to raise much needed funds
for extra-curricular programming.

And then there was the aggravating, though brief, between exits 91 and 92 due to a car fire. Traffic was, in a
word, horrible. But to their credit, state police cleared the scene quicker than the state Department of Transportation predicted, so kudos to them.

We covered these stories and more this week, so search the site and be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter as we follow you!

And as an aside, I had a great time guest editing this week for Editor Bree Shirvell, who will be back Monday.

Stay cool.
