Week In Review: Books, Seahorse, Immigration

A Recap Of The Week's Top Stories On Stonington-Mystic Patch

A proposed bill would allow in-state tuition for the children of illegal immigrants. The college quadrangle could be the next battleground over immigration. The bill was the topic of our Capitol DisPatch: CT column this week.

Holding your breath as you pull into the gas station might become common practice. Prices keep rising and as conflict in the Middle East escalates, it’s likely so will the price at the pump. But while Stonington residents can travel over state lines to buy cheaper gas, businesses, transportation costs and food prices may all suffer as a result of the rising prices.

Noank’s Seahorse was a neighborhood staple until it closed and was sold last month as part of a foreclosure. On Wednesday, local parents stopped by for our Moms Talk Q&A to talk about sibling rivalry, and what parents can do to encourage children to get along. Every week in Moms Talk, our Moms Council of experts and smart moms will take your questions, give advice and share solutions. On March 9, our Moms Council will tackle planning your child’s birthday party from 1 to 2 p.m.

When was the last time you picked up a good book? Wednesday was Dr. Seuss’s birthday. It was also National Read Across America Day and in honor of the written word we asked local librarians from the Stonington Free Library, Westerly Public Library and Mystic & Noank Library for their children and adult book recommendations.

Food columnists Michael Costanza was back on Friday with a decent meal for two for $30. If you thought eating at the casino was expensive, Costanza proved that doesn’t have to be case if you stop by Sol Toro Tequila Grill.

We covered lots more this week and throughout the weekend, so search the site for other stories, follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest updates and check out our calendar to see what's happening next week in town.
