Week In Review: Conservation and Development, Holiday Decorations, Basketball

A Recap Of The Week's Top Stories On Stonington-Mystic Patch

It was a busy week for the Stonington Planning and Zoning Commission. On Tuesday, night after a nearly five-hour meeting they closed a public hearing on a proposed dental clinic at the intersection of Masons Island Road and Harry Austin Drive. A number of neighbors are opposed to the plan. The commission now has 65 days to make a decision.

The Plan of Conservation and Development Subcommittee held the first of what it hopes will be four public input meetings on the 2014 Plan of Conservation and Development. (POCD). The Plan of Conservation and Development Subcommittee is asking residents and business owners to fill out an online survey available at http://surveymonkey.com/s/StoningtonPOCDquestionaire. The survey includes opened ended and choice questions such as ranking issues that include the protection of historic sites, maintenance of local roads and promotion of new commercial development on their importance to the town. Hardcopies are available for pick up and drop off at the Planning and Zoning Office in Town Hall.

The high school girls’ basketball season began this week. Fitch defeated Stonington 56-47 in both teams' season opener on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012.

It's only a week into December but already the holiday decorations are everywhere in town. Cami Beiter wrote about resisting the pressure of early holiday decorating. I think, however, I'm going to get my Christmas Tree this afternoon. The Olde Mistick Village is in the holiday spirit too. On Saturday several merchants participated in a cash mob and earlier in the week employees at five Olde Mistick Village stores shared with Patch their favorite things about Christmas.

We're so excited about the updates we are rolling out to our Patch users in a couple of weeks. Among the most exciting: the transformation of our Directory from a simple listing of information to an interactive platform for Stonington, Mystic and Pawcatuck business owners.

It's all the same great information about each business that our users have come to rely on, but on the new Patch, each business will have its own 'group'. Each business owner who has already claimed his or her listing still has it—but in the group format, Patch offers so much more. We encourage business owners who have not yet claimed the listing to do so now, in order to reap all the benefits of the new Patch right away.

Thanks so much to Allstate - Robert M. Phillips, Mystic Auto Center, Adam Tamsky Fine Art and Mystic Boathouse Restaurant for recently claiming their directory listings on Patch. If you have a business in Stonington, Mystic or Pawcatuck that you want listed on Patch for free or want to claim email Editor Bree Shirvell.

We covered lots more this week and throughout the weekend, so search the site for other stories, follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest updates and check out our calendar to see what's happening next week in town.
