Week In Review: Small Businesses, Love, Harbor Seals

A Recap Of The Week's Top Stories On Stonington-Mystic Patch

It was a tough week for Stonington, Mystic and Pawcatuck residents, and an especially hard week for the students of Stonington Public Schools.

On Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012  15-year-old Stonington High School student, Owen Vail died. Stonington Public Schools and Stonington Human Services offered grief counseling for students and parents, as did Calvary Church in Stonington Borough. Our hearts and thoughts are with the family and friends of the student.

There was lots of business news this week. In Mystic, Fred Astaire Dance Studio announced they are expanding their studio space, local florists said sales for Valentine’s Day were mixed and a number of Stonington businesses spoke with Patch about how they market their businesses on Facebook. And at Patch we would like to remind business owners and managers to claim their businesses on Patch. Search for your business listing and select ‘claim your listing’ in order to make updates to your page.

During the week, First Selectman Edward Haberek Jr. nominated Clean Up Sound and Harbors for an environmental award. The National League of Cities named the Stonington First Selectman to the 2012 Community and Economic Development Police and Advocacy Committee.

And Patch user Chelle Farrand shared a photograph of a harbor seal with us. The seal hung out with the gulls on a sunny February morning. If you have a photograph you want to share with Patch readers for next week’s photo of the week email bree.shirvell@patch.com, or upload them to the Neighborhood Gallery.
