A Recap Of The Week's Top Stories On Stonington-Mystic Patch

The big news this week was Hurricane Sandy. Stonington-Mystic Patch will continue to have coverage of the storm as it develops.

The Mystic community recently welcomed a new shop to the area, while the Stonington Borough community said goodbye to one.

Wayne’s Barber Shop on Pearl Street opened three weeks ago. Three years ago Richard, who also owns Wayne’s Barber Shop in the Groton Shoppers Plaza, closed his Mystic shop on Holmes Street. Lack of foot traffic and slow business forced him to leave downtown Mystic to concentrate just on his Groton location, but he always dreamed of a place in Mystic.

After nearly nine years in closed its doors on Saturday. The shop just couldn’t compete with a poor economy, lack of foot traffic and Tropical Storm Irene.

Two Connecticut residents recently launched a Green K-Cup alternative. Whole Foods choose, Green Cup, an environmentally friendly alternative to the K-Cup used in millions of Keurig machines and other single-cup coffeemakers, for a nationwide launch that begins on Nov. 1.

Stonington officially welcomed new superintendent Dr. Van Riley to the area this week with a meet and greet at the Mystic Aquairum. Riley started Oct. 15 and has said one of this top priorities is meeting the community and making sure they know they can contact him with questions and concerns.

Last week the Mystic Aquarium welcomed two fur seals to Mystic. Siblings Jack, 10, and Sam, 9, came from the New York Aquarium. This week the Mystic Aquarium said goodbye to two five-month-old harbor seals.  The Mystic Aquarium’s animal rescue team released the seals into the waters off of a beach in Charlestown, R.I.
