Hurricane Irene Town Update - Monday Night

Hurricane Irene Town Update - Monday Night

I wanted to keep you updated on the progress after Hurricane Irene. I am very encouraged by the work accomplished today. Ten CL&P power crews were working in Stonington throughout the town. I personally went out to thank them for the great work they been doing to restore power. Most are from the Boston area and came down to assist CL&P. They have been working with our Highway Crew in cutting the wires, removing the trees and re-connecting the lines.

With over 60 power damages from the hurricane, more than half have been have been re-connected. So I feel optimistic we are in a “days” situation overall. Some areas today have been re-energized and more is continuing.  Our CL&P Liaison has been terrific assisting us with expediting the process.  The lights are coming on!

A couple of updates on other items:

  • We have a power regeneration area set-up at the Emergency
Operations Center at the Police Department. This is to re-power any medical
items you have. I visited the senior citizen complexes today to check on how
the seniors are doing through the power outage.
  • Thank you to the YMCA offering showers to residents at the Westerly and Arcadia site. Mystic is still without power.
  • Town Hall will be closed Tuesday as Internet & Phone connections are still down for the facility.
  • Landfill will be open Tuesday. I have waived any fees for disposal of Hurricane damage related items
  • The Superintendent of Schools joined us for our Emergency Management Team meeting and stated she will be reaching out to the parents tomorrow to discuss school.

Finally, please call the Emergency Operation Center with any questions at 860-599-7583 and 860-599-7584. I look forward to continuing to keep residents updated about information by local media, and personally through my social media sites of Facebook, Twitter and my blog.
