Hurricane Sandy: October 28, 2012 Afternoon Update From The First Selectman

We are now implementing our recommended mandatory evacuation of low lying areas in town.

We are now implementing our recommended mandatory evacuation of low-lying areas in town. Similar to other towns we are requesting individuals who live in imminent flood areas to mandatorily evacuate to the shelter or inland areas. Such areas include Stonington Borough, Lords Point, Latimer Point, Mason’s Island, parts of lower Mystic and Mechanic Street and River Road and Downtown Pawcatuck.

Throughout the night the weather will deteriorate and tropical storm winds will begin after midnight. On Monday winds will develop at night to 60-80 MPH gusts that will become sustained. Major flooding is likely to occur in Downtown Pawcatuck specifically from the river.

  • At 5 p.m. the Town of Stonington Shelter will be open to receive residents. The Red Cross will staff this location along with Human Services.
  • Pawcatuck Dike is closed and residents need to drive alternate routes.
  • Please be sure to secure or remove outdoor items including any lawn signs.
  • Please prepare essentials for power outage and sheltering for duration of 24-36 hours from this storm.

I will continue to provide update on Facebook (Edward Haberek Jr), Twitter (@FirstSelectman), First Selectman Blog http://ehaberek.wordpress.com/ and Stonington Patch Blog.
