Be Our Valentine at Friday Night Folk

Figuring out what to do with your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day? Friday Night Folk invites you to enjoy a concert with accomplished local musicians--who are both sweethearts and husband and wife performers.

When Ben and Nancy Parent sing, their close harmonies balance Ben's rough-edged tone, reminiscent of The Waterboys' Mike Scott, and Nancy's silky, Joan Baez-like sound. Verses flow seamlessly into choruses and instrumental breaks, each passage getting its own fingerprint. Nancy plays pedal steel when she’s not making her guitar sing alongside Ben’s. She began performing on stage at the age of six and pursued her passion for singing and acting into college. The couple is well-known as leaders of the popular folk-rock band The Rivergods, but there is a softer side to them as well.  In October 2012, Nancy released her solo album “Vision of Angels” on the Friday Night Folk stage.

Other featured performers will be Dan Spurr and Liz Larson. You’ve no doubt heard of Dan’s band the Can Kickers, and Liz’s band, the Liz Larsons. Where did their collaborations start? Think Johnny Cash and June Carter sitting on a porch singing the old time tunes of lore and writing the new folk for a new generation. They are inspired by Pete Seeger, the Carter Family, and more. Dan and Liz have been off-stage a bit in the last year due to the arrival of little Joanna--we welcome back with this Valentine’s Day concert.
