The La Grua Center Arts & Culture Series will be hosting a presentation about the recent project replacing and increasing the clearance of Stonington's two train bridges on Thursday, January 17th at 6 pm.

This educational presentation by the engineering firm Modjeski and Masters, representatives from Amtrak, and local officials, will include before and after photos, as well as a short video "The Fast Track," filmed in Stonington, about the accelerated construction techniques applied.

A critical link along Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, Stonington's two century-old train bridges facilitate heavy commuter traffic between New York and Boston. To minimize disruption to traffic, replacing the bridges had to be done over the course of a single weekend. Working closely with Amtrak and Cianbro, the bridge contractor, the engineering firm Modjeski and Masters developed the designs, which provided an additional two feet of clearance and laid the groundwork for a quick transition.

The team will lead a discussion on the general design and construction process, and how they considered present and future needs and concerns of the surrounding community. Hear first-hand about the challenges and design considerations of transitioning these important historical structures to the next century.

This event is free and open to all.
Seating is limited, please arrive early.

While I'm all for the values that the Ten Commandments gives us, I also don't want to be defenselessRead More because someone who chooses not to follow them is putting my life in danger. The Right to Bear Arms was created by men, for the purpose of the people of this country having a means to defend ourselves from people who mean us harm, or from a government who might seek to take away our arms for nefarious purposes. A very great man once said, "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend with my life your right to say it." Just out of curiosity, if someone were to invade your home, and attack you and your family, putting your lives in danger, what would you be willing to do to defend your lives?

Who gave us this right to bear arms? Men. The only God given law was the Ten Commandments. One ofRead More them explicitly says "Thou shall not kill."

I agree. The bottom line is we're all defenseless if we are deprived of our right to bear arms. GunRead More restrictions do nothing to prevent criminals from getting and using guns. They simply impede law-abiding citizens from getting and using them to defend ourselves from the criminals. I don't want to be stuck at a gunfight with nothing more than a cell phone camera.
