Daily Five: A New Look For Stonington-Mystic Patch

Five things to know for Monday, Dec. 17, 2012

1. I'm really excited about the new Patch format but I know it can be jarring to see such a big change, so here are a few helpful tips for using the new site:

Top News: Same great news and information as the “classic” Patch. It’s there at the top of the site and still leads your newsletter. In fact, we’ve expanded the amount of news slots in the daily newsletter to 7 articles, up from 5. (Not getting the newsletter? Fast sign up here.)

The Look: Patch’s mission has always been to make your life “ridiculously easy.” And that’s not just to give you breaking news or the latest from Town Hall, it’s also to save you time, money, or to share what's great about living here. We wanted a design that would reflect all that Patch is.

The BIG Change: The big change (and the one I’m most excited about) is that now it’s so much easier to post your news or share an opinion. Just hit the green “Post” button on any page and get your news and events right on the site. Also, by following groups that interest you, you will also be able to get exactly the information you want, when you want it. Your homepage feed (below Top News) and your daily newsletter will be instantly personalized. So if you prefer more news about taxes or opinion, you can choose that right from the groups page. I encourage you explore all our groups (or even start your own!)

2. The “Mystic Polar Express” has arrived in the Children’s Room at the Mystic & Noank Library. Barry Boodman and Bill Salancy created and donated what has become a holiday tradition. Children and families are invited to visit the library during regular hours to make the train puff and toot its way around this magical, mystical setting. As a fundraiser, the library is auctioning off the entire set throughout the month of December. Bidding closes on Saturday, December 22 at 2 p.m. The Mystic & Noank Library is located at 40 Library St., Mystic, Conn. Call 860-536-7721 or email mnl@juno.com for more information.

4. The holidays are here and so is all the food.

“When party planning during the holidays, it’s important to have variety,” said Stacy Kennedy, MPH, RD, CSO, LDN, a nutritionist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. “Many of the foods we enjoy around the holidays are not only delicious to eat, but they may also contain cancer-fighting nutrients.”

Kennedy and her colleagues created a list of foods and recipes that belong on anyone’s “nice list.”

5.
