Remember To Always Get Permits

Now that the weather is getting a little bit nicer out, a lot of people are doing a lot of work on their homes.  When you are doing work, sometime you will need to obtain permits from your city hall to do the work.  If you are putting on a roof, redoing the electrical, etc., permits are needed.  Some people will just do the work, not obtain the permit, and save a couple of dollars.  Sounds all good, right?

The problem happens when you go to SELL your home.  The town will realize that the permits are pulled at that point and make you pay for the permit.  That alone doesn't sound all that bad, but some town halls in the area are requiring the sellers to update those repairs to the current codes, not the codes needed when you initial did the work.

So say, you redid your electrical back in 2006 without a permit.  In order for the permit to now be given and for you to close on the sale of your house, the town will require you to redo the electrical to the 2014 codes.  So in the long run, for you to save a couple of dollars, now you have to spend a lot more re-doing the work.  The city will always find the money they're owed, just like the IRS.

I can confidently say, it's always better to do it right the first time.

Have you done any work on your home?  Did you get permits? (I won't turn you in.)  I'd love to hear your experience or thoughts.
