Romney Picks Paul Ryan as VP; What's Your Take?

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney settles on a fiscally conservative member of the House of Representatives as his running mate in the 2012 election.

Presidential candidate Mitt Romney has chosen Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan as his running mate for the November election.

Romney announced the decision in a press release Saturday morning, titled “America’s Comeback Team,” as well as through his “Mitt’s VP” smart phone app.

Ryan, 42, is in his seventh term in Congress representing Wisconsin’s First Congressional District. He’s also a chairman of the House Budget Committee, and last year he unveiled a counter budget titled “Roadmap for America’s Future,” which proposed to eliminate the federal deficit over a multi-year period.

Democrats and liberals derided the budget, however, saying it focused more on cuts to spending for social programs and less on tax cuts for the wealthy.

The Huffington Post notes that both liberals and conservatives will be “thrilled” with Romney’s choice.

Do you think Mitt Romney made the right choice in choosing Paul Ryan as his running mate in the 2012 presidential race? Take our poll and share your thoughts in the comments.

I wonder if there will be a Vegas line on Biden's f-bombs.....
I think that you may be right, but I refuse to underestimate the dirty tricks of the the Obama campaign thus far. As a good friend and colleague often reminds me 'Negative ads are so popular because they work.' If Romney and Ryan can keep the attention of the people on the economy and offer 'hope and change' they will sway a lot of voters. I think they need to hit hard on issues, smack down the negative bombs from OFA, and bring the message back on to the true problems - the economy and jobs.

BREE, you didn't do that!

Sorry B.R.E.E., according to Obama, you didn't do that.
Tiiu August 14, 2012 at 02:39 am
I am puzzled as to why people think President Obama has been bad for the economy. The stock market has soared since he took office. Sadly, it did not do the same during the years of the Republican presidency. Also, watch out, people. You cannot cut the size of the federal government without tens of thousands of people losing their jobs. So, brace yourselves for unemployment going even higher if the Romney-Ryan ticket wins. After all, the mark of success of a good businessman is his ability to create PROFITS, not jobs. So watch the jobs DISAPPEAR if the conservatives come into power--and with the disappearing jobs there will also be disappearing social safety nets for the people who lose their employment and their health insurance if they were lucky enough to have any in the first place. Ungenerous employers will go to any length to avoid giving their employees health insurance. If you are rich and/or healthy in this country, please count your blessings and do not begrudge those who are less fortunate and rely on government assistance. Remember, there but for the grace of God go you.
And , one more thing, please do not blame the Democrats for uncontrolled spending in this country. It was the Bush-Cheney team that took us into two wars while lowering taxes at the same time. I know their reign is over, but sadly, that mentality still exists in the conservative camp.
B.R.E.E. August 14, 2012 at 02:53 am
Yeah, but neither candidate is going to increase SS for you. Republicans say it is SS itself that takes the control away from the person and the average Joe knows what to do with their money. Perhaps if you had more control of your own money you would have invested and received a better return than SS. I don't know you so I can not make that choice only you can decide that for yourself. Unfortunately, regardless of your vote your situation doesn't seem likely it will change if you are 65+ on SS. Based on the current political climate one party will need to control everything in order to make changes that will result in curbing healthcare costs. Until we solve that issue, medicare is likely to take some hits. As a nation we like the for profit system and we are big on the free market so healthcare professionals can change what they want for most services. Also, important to note is the increasingly popular for profit hospital systems that going around buying up small defunct hospitals. They have become a huge lobbying group along with insurance companies and will most certainly fight any reforms that could threaten profits.

I'm not sure what you think I didn't do...
LiveForFreedom August 14, 2012 at 03:31 am
@Titu
Please take off your pro Obama glasses. I can give you dozens of reasons why people think President Obama has been bad for the economy. The problem is no cares to hear these reasons if they are Obama supporters. Reason Number One. The United States does not have a self sustaining Energy policy. Have you noticed that on January 6, 2009, the day of President Obama ignaugaration, the average price of a gallon of gas was $189.8 per gallon. Todays price is $3.95 per gallon What will be the cost of gasoline on November 6, 2012?
wtfdrez August 14, 2012 at 04:23 am
Tiiu
Don't be puzzled, You are stuck in Obamaland, It's like Disneyland, but it sucks. The president has no plan to get the country out of this mess so he blames Bush. The people that are less fortunate than you are laughing at you!!! Seriously, they keep making babies swiping their welfare cards, getting free daycare and probably living better than you do. Wake up!! we went to war because innocent Americans were slaughtered on 9/11. I can tell that you weren't affected by the mass murder. Ungenerous employers are not generous because the president is running them out of business, you can't be generous when your company is being taxed to death. No matter what anyone comments you will still vote for Obama and you and your president are ruining our children's future.
Jeff Brown August 14, 2012 at 01:15 pm
Wow so let me get this straight , since Tiiu had a differing opinion than you, He or she didn't care about 9/11 and hates children! And you wonder why no one likes republicans. Furthermore what did 9/11 have to do with Iraq or Afganistan? After 9/11 we saw a outpouring of love for our country both here and abroad like i've never seen, and had a real chance to make a difference. Instead Bush and Cheney flushed that right down the toilet and made us less popular than ever and cheapened the lives of all those lost in the name of greed and power.
Tiiu August 14, 2012 at 02:02 pm
Thank you, Jeff. It always amazes me that despite the greedy shenanigans of wealthy investment bankers, people still blame "welfare moms" for what ails this country. And no, wtfdrez, whoever you are, I really don't think the people swiping their welfare cards are living better than me, nor do I think they are laughing at me or anyone else for that matter. Have you ever been in a grocery line behind these poor souls? I repeat, would you want to change places with them? And please do not accuse me of not having been affected by 9/11. You don't even know me, but you make snap judgments about me, as you seem to about the president. For example, you said that the president is running employers out of business by taxing them to death. Please elaborate with specific examples of this. Our taxes are the lowest they have ever been historically, but do you believe they should be even lower? How will we ever balance the budget that way and keep from ruining our children's future? And Live for Freedom, do you honestly believe the president controls the price of gasoline any more than he controls the price of cars or aspirin, for that matter? If he did control it, you would be yelling about dictatorship, or socialism, or something similar. The price of oil demonstrates capitalism at its purest, so suck it up! So don't cry about gasoline prices. Buy stock in ExxonMobil and laugh all the way to the bank.
Nancy August 14, 2012 at 03:09 pm
Yes, I have been behind this people on their expensive cell phones MANY times in the grocery stores. When I follow out shortly behind them and watch them get into their NEW cars and I get into my 12 year old car, the last thing I have called them is poor souls!! And now with another of Obama's executive orders, yet AGAIN changing the laws as passed by Congress, this time during the Clinton welfare reform, regarding job search, that requirement will now be relaxed or totally waived. This along with the admin. running ads, btw ads, costing up to 3 million each, to sign up for food stamps, has made us into a nation of welfare "souls". This is Obama's view... a citizenry dependent upon goverment, which also has burgeoned under his admin. Is this what you all want????
LiveForFreedom August 14, 2012 at 05:23 pm
@Tiiu You asked if the president can influence the price of gasoline?
Actually Yes. In 2010 President Obama threatened to release 2 billions barrels of oil from the Strategic Reserve Supply to lower oil prices on the spot market. His threat worked and prices were lowered. Forgive me for saying but either you are misinformed or ignoring history. President Obama and the Democrats have no National Energy Policy. They refuse to allow new refineries to be built. The refuse to allow new oil fields to be drilled. Paul Ryan developed a National Energy Plan back in 2006. He proposed that we develop natural gas and oil fields in the United States to become independent of foreign oil supply. He proposed we build two new refineries. The day Barack Obama was ignaugarated, January 9, 2009, gasoline was $1.89 per gallon. It is now $3.95 per gallon. I am self employed and depend on my car for work. Maybe you are wealthy and apathetic to our problems. High gas prices hurt the poor and lower income families. High gas prices raise prices on items we buy. I HOLD OBAMA RESPONSIBLE for refusing to build new refineries and drill new oil wells in the United States.
Jeff Brown August 14, 2012 at 06:49 pm
@Nancy, i honestly wouldn't know an ebt card from a credit, pre-paid,debit or any other type of card unless maybe if i really got right up on the person in front of me. Let alone follow them out to see what kind of car they drive or phone they own. Sounds like a pretty miserable existence to me . But that's just me. But of course i believe in welfare reform and limits . It's too bad there are people who exploit the system , but if i'm ever behind someone in line and they're short on money to buy diapers or food i wouldn't hesitate to help them out and that comes directly out of my pocket, and i would think most people are the same . @Liveforfreedom i see what your saying and pretty much agree but , correct me if i'm wrong please, didn't obama say when he was campaigng that he was opposed to drilling? Now that's it's a real problem of course people want him ( me included ) to reverse his stance on that. But i do think he should have laid out a much more solid energy alternative plan by now. Let's see this time around maybe.
Tiiu August 14, 2012 at 07:28 pm
Dear Live for Freedom, I dislike high gasoline prices as much as the next person, trust me. But I feel your blame is displaced. The President cannot build refineries or drill wells, unless you want the oil industry to be nationalized, rather than privately owned. Oil refineries have been closing over the past few months because of lower demand for gasoline (which is a good thing), so companies, in the interest of making profits, are closing the refineries that are least cost-effective. Now, can any President, Democrat or Repubican, require companies to keep these refineries open in order to drive down the price? I don't think so. As far as opening our strategic oil reserves to saturate the market, that he can do. But in the national interest, should he? Those reserves are there for a true emergency. It is sad, but true, that we consumers really have no choice with gasoline. Unless you are anywhere near a public transportation system, you need your car in this country and you need to buy gasoline. Therefore we are at the mercy of the oil companies.

I'm not interested in:
1-Having my "Female Rights" trampled upon. My body is not public or government property. All decisions regarding it are mine and mine alone. 2-Seeing inequity continue under the misguided guise of religion. 3-Being called 'weak' or a 'leech' or otherwise put down because I get a refund from the IRS. Not when Exxon-Mobil gets a refund 1000x bigger & makes 10,000x more money than I did. 4-Tax breaks for corporations that export American jobs overseas. 5-Continuing this idiotic practice of having some items for the American Military made overseas. I wonder what Sun Tzu would say about that practice. 6-Seeing "illegal aliens" treated as though they're sub-human. I'm tired of complaints about "Juan" who manages to eek out 50 extra bucks a week and send it home to "mom". How is he worse than the person who stashes away thousands a week in a Swiss or Cayman Island bank account? 7-Blathering complaints about people who "don't want to work". I haven't seen any numbers or stats on that one & I can't find any. I can find numbers for people who can't get a full-time job anymore because there's this 'new thing' of hiring people for 35hrs./wk or less that companies seem enamored with. I can find numbers for people who are 'underemployed'. I can find numbers for people working their butts off and still can't make the rent. Unfortunately, there is no perfect candidate out there for me. I'll just have to vote for 'the lesser of two evils'. Again.
LiveForFreedom August 14, 2012 at 07:57 pm
But doesn't President Obama back the environmentalists and will veto any Congressional legislation to open new federal land to drilling?
The Congress and Obama have the authority to pass legislation to allow new drilling in 2012. The Congress and Obama have the authority to pass legislation to allow a new Refinery to be built. Unless this policy changes with Obamas in the near future, I see higher gas prices. If I understand what you are saying, we are hopelessly screwed while Congress and President do nothing. If this is Obama's strategy, gas will be $4.50 per gallon by Election Day. The voters will revolt.
LB August 14, 2012 at 08:22 pm
@nancy--Did you ever ask any of those people with their fancy phones and shiny new cars what job they HAD and LOST or did you just make a snap decision about them because they used Food Stamps? The only thing you really know in that situation is that you're jealous of their phone and their car. No one on the State dole can afford a new car and I know that because for ten years I worked in a law office that dealt almost exclusively with Title 19 clients. They were lucky if they had $50.00 left at the end of the month to spend in some horribly frivolous manner. These weren't people who "didn't want to work" these were people who couldn't work;the sick, the elderly, and in many cases, the mentally deranged...no, not 'challenged'...deranged. None of them have a fancy phone or shiny new car. Most of them don't have a car at all. As for the job search requirement, I'm coming off 9 months of Unemployment (and 10 yrs. of under-employment) I can tell you that requirement is the biggest joke going. No one ever asked me if I looked for a job, all I had to do was click 'yes' on the website when I filed every week.

You do know Mr. Ryan's upbringing, right? He certainly didn't grow up in the lap of luxury.
The rest of your charges read like a summary of any given day's Talking Points Memo. At the heart of all your list of complaints lie countless billions in waste from earmarks - otherwise known as pork. And while pork is an infection on both sides of the aisle, the leading porkmeisters have tended democrat. Mr. Obama was one of the top three pork barrellers in his short tenure in the Senate. Your class warfare rhetoric is equally tiresome. Ryan certainly is a man who clawed his way up the ladder, working hard and chasing his vision. Romney was born into a wealthy family (like that's supposed to be a sin) and made his own fortune. Through hard work, intelligence, and diligence. Romney actually earned a degree from Harvard's Schools of Law AND Business. That's a fairly remarkable achievement, no? He graduated Cum Laude and in the top 5% of his class. We still don't know what Mr. Obama did in his tenure besides rack up a couple of accolades and work on his best selling fiction that would be pitched as his life's story.
Justin August 15, 2012 at 02:32 am
Nobel peace prize for what, assassinating American citizens? What kind of grades did Obama get at Harvard....SEALED you'll never know. Businesses hire people Thomas, stop drinking the Kolaid.
John Martin August 15, 2012 at 02:51 am
I rather think that Mr. Obama dodged his obligation to get a budget passed on purpose. In order to push a budget, you have to set priorities. In order to set priorities, you have to make decisions where some programs will be funded and others won't receive funding. This will put Mr. Obama in a position that he still has managed to avoid. He doesn't stand for anything of substance. This is a man who abstained more than he voted in the Illinois State Senate - and his US Senate voting record wasn't much better.
By avoiding committing himself to a course of action, he can continue to cater to the various elements of the 'big tent' democratic party.
John Martin August 15, 2012 at 03:09 am
Socialism will never triumph in this nation. OWS was another failure in that idiotic experiment.
Nobel Peace prize - for what exactly? Being Barak Obama? Please. As for his Harvard Law Review experience, Politico ran an article about that. Seems like he only managed to write one article - a torturous ode supporting abortion. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0808/12705.html A list of Mr. Obama's abject - and expensive - failures. The Stimulus. $800 billion, promised to lower unemployment to 6% by 2012. Sorry. Didn't create the 3.5 million private jobs (or even saved or created). Did manage to lose 1.1 million net jobs (using the more accurate u-6 table). The PPACA? Premiums have risen 1 to 3% and are likely to rise again next year. Many companies are seeking waivers...like the ones that Unions and Obama supporters got. Green jobs? Alternative energy? I am all for that. But Solyndra is the poster child for dozens of companies that we sunk billions into...with no return on investment. ever. He did kill Keystone. The Chinese are loving him for that. So when we can't run our homes and businesses on solar and wind (because the companies went bankrupt and the owners looted the kitty - after donating to OFA), we get to buy Canadian oil. From China. And you have the gall to make accusations about predatory capitalism? Heh. That's funny..
wtfdrez August 15, 2012 at 05:21 am
Jeff- Looks like you got a buddy! btw i never said Tiiu hates children what I said is that the career welfare crowd are laughing at him, not to worry they are laughing at me too. I also said he wasn't affected by 9/11. He admits he blames Bush and Cheney for the war, so obviously he is mis guided in his opinion. Do you really think George W. on 9/11 late that evening (all on his own decided to wage war). Do you remember congress singing God bless America on the white house steps, this war was voted on and the vote was yes. I say to Tiiu i apologize to suggest that you were not affected by 9/11, but blaming GWB and Cheney for the war is silly stupid......
Paul Ryan was choosen because he will bring medicare front and center, Obamacare will cut medicare benefits billions of dollars, but the media has turned a blind eye to that, aren't you all sick of Obamas stupid teenage swagger whenever he makes a public appearance. My 14 year old has more swag than him, and that dim light Joe Biden must be on heavy duty drugs to say some of the things he has said, i ask you all if God forbid something happens to our president do we want Biden to be our next president....
Tiiu August 15, 2012 at 12:29 pm
John, I am so glad to hear that you are for alternative energy as one of the solutions for our nation becoming energy-independent of foreign oil. The path to energy-independence is a long one with many competing interests. I do think that for the most part the American people have done as much as they can do on individual levels. Unfortunately, it seems that the more we conserve, the more utility companies and oil companies jack up their prices. You probably know that in Conn., the DPUC has allowed CL&P to maintain a certain profit margin. That means that if we all used less electricity, thereby cutting into company profits, the company would be allowed to raise their rates to make up the difference, thereby rendering the individual's attempt to conserve for the purpose of trying to save a few bucks on one's electric bill totally pointless, wouldn't you agree? So you spend lots of money replacing your windows and appliances with an eye towards energy-efficiency, and the thanks you get are higher rates because now you've hurt the electric company's bottom line. Installing solar panels or a windmill are projects far beyond the ordinary Joe's pocketbook, despite the tax incentives. I'm sure we are all driving less, but the price of gasoline goes up regardless. Yet we are angry at our government, rather than at the oil barons, who are the ones screwing us.
LiveForFreedom August 15, 2012 at 01:07 pm
The United States has the largest reserves of oil and Natural Gas still undeveloped.
We have more Natural Gas then Saudia Arabia does oil. Natural Gas alternative energy cars run clean. They burn 100% complete with no carbon monoxide or hyrocarcarbons. The U.S. Post Office and many companies use trucks, vans, delivery vehicles and taxis that run on Natural Gas vehicles. Natural Gas is America's Alternative Energy. Petition President Obama to drill now. The Democrats, included Obama use the "Oil Baron" lies as propaganda.. If we use Electric Cars, that is fine. President Obama promotes that Americans buy a $40,000 Chevrolet Volt. But we need more electricty to charge these Chevy Volts. Electricity is expensive and is generated by Nuclear, Oil and Coal Fire Plants. Are you against Electric Cars and building more Nuclear, Oil and Coal Fire Plants? Or should we go back to horses and wagons?
GURU August 15, 2012 at 01:43 pm
To say that Mr. Ryan didn't grow up in the lap of luxury disappoints me. You always document your research and have valid points even though I often disagree. Mr. Ryan's father was a lawyer and their family spent many vacations skiing in the Rockies. As a teacher in New London public schools you have an opportunity to see real poverty, to make that statement is a disservice to people who really struggle. Mr. Ryan is what people of your general ilk criticize, a career politician. I believe his only job outside of politics was working for his father's company that builds roads and military barracks (many government contracts). Having read many of your posts, in which you elaborate on your upbringing, Mr. Ryan's is far off from yours and many of your students. Much closer to Mr. Romney's upbringing; not class warfare just the facts.
John Martin August 16, 2012 at 12:47 am
Guru, he went hiking and skiing in the Rockies? We were lower-middle class (I guess) growing up, but we went to the Finger Lakes and Sebabo Lake and such.
Paul's dad died when he was 16, and worked at McDonalds as a grill cook. During summers in college, Ryan was a salesman for Oscar Mayer and once drove the company's famed Wienermobile; Doesn't sound like a kid living large off of major construction projects. Actually, it seems like Paul doesn't have much to do with the old family firm. Before the Socialists took everything, one of my great-grandparents owned hundreds of acres of prime vineyards and another owned large cattle and goat holdings. The government seized all that and my dad came here with nothing. In fact, almost every source - including some not terribly kind to Mr. Ryan - indicate that his college was paid for from him saving his Social Security death benefits from his dad. If he was a son of Ryan Central, I don't think he would have had to worried about paying for college. And it seems while in college, he began interning and moved almost immediately into working for Wisconsin pols in Washington. He also was elected pretty young. I wouldn't trust Think progress, Salon, or the Daily Kos on his life. While he never lived in the projects, he was a kid who not only lost his dad at 16, he was the one to find him dead in bed.
John Martin August 16, 2012 at 12:55 am
I am actually pretty angry at government, because they allow the utility companies to hold these monopolies. They also kill programs like the Keystone pipeline, which would create jobs and provide a lot of high quality crude oil that can be refined to provide pretty clean energy. They also fail to invest in 'clean coal' technology - and it does exist. All the while, antiquated reactors are accumulating tremendous amounts of waste, while new reactors are idled. Reactors that run much, much more cleanly.
I am not a specialist, but I read articles written by those who are. We are decades away from viable solar and wind power that can provide significant, cost-effective, and environmentally sound energy. You might not be aware of how toxic the creation of photovoltiac cells is, but the amount of waste generated is appalling. Or batteries for the hybrid and electric cars? Again, incredibly toxic byproducts and the disposal of those expensive batteries will create mountains of toxic waste that will certainly rival the radioactive nasties in Millstone. I absolutely support RESPONSIBLE research. An example is SpaceX. They got a bit of seed money, hit goals, and got more. They launched a private capsule and landed it, and got a little more money. Soon, they will launch their manned capsule, and, if successful, will be transporting NASA astronauts - and private citizens. Solyndra is one of many examples of panic decision making.
John Martin August 16, 2012 at 12:55 am
Agreed freedom - I am a huge fan of natural gas.
