Fire On Elm Street In Stonington Damages Apartment Building

Two People Were Evacuated From A Sunday Night Fire At 18 Elm Street

A fire damaged a three-story apartment building in Stonington Borough Sunday night.

The responded to the fire at 18 Elm Street around 7 p.m., and had the fire quickly under control. No one was injured in the fire, but two people in the building were safely evacuated.

Stonington Borough Fire Chief Jeff Hoadley said the fire began on the back deck of the second floor apartment. The department was able to keep the fire contained to the outside of the house.

The second and third floor tenants were not home at the time of the fire, but firefighters evacuated first floor tenant Erica Wright and her boyfriend. 

Wright said she didn’t even know there was a fire until the firefighters showed up, and told her and her boyfriend to get out. Her apartment, however, suffered significant ceiling and water damage.

Hoadley said the balloon, or hollow wall, construction of the building required the firefighters to cut into the walls on the first floor. There is water damage throughout the building.

Real estate agent Ellyn Fox owns the building.

Hoadley the cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation.
