UPDATED: Fire In Pawcatuck Apartment Building Displaces 15 Residents

The cause of the fire remains under investigation

7:30 p.m.: A fire at an apartment building in downtown Pawcatuck forced at least 15 people from their homes Thursday evening.

The fire started in an apartment on the third floor of the mixed use commercial/residential building at 36/38 West Broad Street around 6 p.m. The building is next door to Citizens Bank and in addition to the apartments is also home to Cookie Nail Salon. Pawcatuck Fire and Stonington Police responded to the fire and Fire Chief Tom Long said the first priority upon arriving on the scene was evacuating the tenants.

There were no injuries in the fire, but the fire forced the residents and businesses out of their homes. The American Red Cross was on the scene assisting the tenants in finding temporary houses.

Long said the fire was contained to one apartment within the building, but the building isn’t habitable. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

7:00 p.m.: An apartment building above Cookie Nail Salon next to the Citizens Bank caught fire Thursday night. There is apparent smoke damage to the top floor apartment and fire fighters are still on the scene.
