Report: Fire Destroys Home on Ram Island

Firefighters had to hop on a boat to get to the private island to put the fire out.

A fire destroyed a 2,900-square-foot Ranch-style home on Ram Island Friday evening.

According to information transmitted over the scanner, firefighters boarded a boat to get to the private island, about a half-mile offshore in Stonington. The house was fully engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived, Mystic Fire Chief Frank “Fritz” Hilbert told The Day.

The 16-acre property is owned by the Ragsdale family, according to Vision Appraisal. They were not home at the time of the fire, The Day reported.

Day Photographer Tim Cook captured images of the fire burning and the aftermath, when all that remained were two chimneys.

Visit The Day's website to see those images and to read more about the fire.
