Stonington Man Injured In Two-Car Crash

65-year-old Joseph McKernan was transported by LifeStar after the Monday afternoon accident on Route 1.

A two-car accident on Monday afternoon on Route 1 in Pawcatuck near Stonington High School brought the LifeStar helicopter to town to bring one driver to the hospital.

Joseph McKernan, 65, of Stonington, was taken by LifeStar after the 2:57 p.m., collision, said Stonington Police Sgt. Bryan Schneider. McKernan was driving a GMC pick-up eastbound on Route 1.

The other car involved, a Toyota pick-up, was driven westbound by Drew Bentz, 60, Pawcatuck, Schneider said. Bentz's truck rolled over after the collision and he had to be extricated by the Pawcatuck Fire Department. Westerly Ambulance also responded.

Schneider said Bentz refused medical treatment. The Day is reporting that McKernan was treated and released from Rhode Island Hospital.

That collision, which happened between Spellman Drive and Brookside, and an earlier crash on Pequot Trail that closed that road for a utility pole to be repaired tied up traffic in that part of town for the better part of the afternoon.
