Stonington Police Investigate Student's Social Media Posts

The Stonington Police Department is investigating social media posts that started as early as three weeks ago.

 

The is investigating social media posts from a student.

Stonington Public Schools sent out an email to families this afternoon alerting them of the continuing investigation.

“It was brought to our attention today that a social media post dated 3 weeks ago has warranted investigation by the Stonington Police department,” the email stated. “The police and school administration have taken appropriate measures to ensure the safety of students and staff. No danger to school, students or staff exists.”

According to The Day a 17-year old student at posted several messages on his Twitter account with the hash tag “#letsblowupshs.” The student posted some threatening tweets as early as March 1, 2012 but The Day reported that on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 the student posted several more threatening tweets.

Stonington Police Captain Jerry Desmond told The Day he was surprised the police department, which learned about the incident from a reporter, did not learn about the postings earlier as many high school students follow the student on Twitter.

Following a , students at the high school attended counseling sessions on Thursday, March 22, with a focus on how to ask for help when they or another student is in need. A medical incident involving a different high school student prompted the counseling sessions.

According to the email sent by Stonington Public Schools the police investigation is ongoing.
