Decision About Stonington Public Schools To Be Made Tomorrow

The ten Connecticut Light & Power crews that arrived in Stonington Monday spent the day working on a variety of issues throughout town. 

First Selectman Edward Haberek J., said that crews fixed the light that fell on Flanders Road and replaced the telephone poles that fell near .

“I’m extremely encourage about the power from the work that was done today and the collaboration between CL&P and the highway department,” Haberek said.

He said the priority of the crews was to clip and trim the trees and connect and reactivate the power.

While there was no timeline for restoring power, Haberek said that after talking to several officials in other towns he was very happy with the amount of work being done in Stonington.

As of 7:30 p.m., Monday about 90 percent of Stonington CL&P customers were without power down slightly from a high over 95 percent during the storm.

While the Red Cross shelter at today a regional shelter opened in East Lyme. The closure of the shelter at Stonington High School means a professional development day for Stonington Public School staff will be held tomorrow, Tuesday August 29.

A decision on if to delay the start of school will be made by Superintendent Leanne Masterjoseph tomorrow, Haberek said. Several other towns have already announced plans to delay the beginning of school possibly until after the Labor Day weekend.

Haberek said the town is also considering taking down part of  the Campbell Grain Building in Pawcatuck that collapsed so that it doesn’t damage other structures.
