Haberek Requests Planning Director ASAP

Stonington's first selectman has been clear but PZC members are at odds about the need for a planning director.

Stonington Planning Commission members have already agreed to hire a planning director by Jan. 1, 2014 but First Selectman Edward Haberek wants to hire someone sooner than that.

Haberek, who is the interim planning director, has stated that he doesn't have the expertise to perform the job and  asked the Finance Committee to allocate money leftover from the 2012-13 budget so that the town can hire someone to fill the vacant position, according to a report in the Westerly Sun. Haberek asked for $37,576 to fund the position through the rest of the year although $40,000 is already dedicated to the position beginning Jan 1.

Commission members have yet to come to a consensus about the need of a director or even the need to hire a consultant to determine the need of a director.

The Finance Committee will decide on the appropriation at its next meeting in September and residents can vote on it at a town meeting.
