Low Bidder for Town's New Turf Field Has Professional Experience

When issues with the natural surface at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA, reached a crisis point in 2006, R.A.D. Sports came to the rescue; athletic fields committee to meet at 4:30 tonight, April 1, to talk turf.

R.A.D. Sports of Rockland, MA, submitted the lowest bid — $963,900 — last week for the new synthetic turf field planned for Stonington High School.

The company, however, is no fledgling operation.

In fact, brothers Rob and Derek Delmonico, who run R.A.D., were tapped in 2006 to rescue the shredded natural turf at Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots and New England Revolution, and pulled off a stunning achievement by installing FieldTurf in less than two weeks. Usually, the process takes six weeks.

On Monday afternoon at 4:30 at Stonington High School, the Athletic Field Improvements Oversight Committee will discuss the bids and decide which type of turf they want for the long-anticipated field, which will be used by the football, soccer and field hockey teams. Also on the docket is whether to choose alternating panels of light green and dark green or stick with the traditional solid green.

Voters approved spending $2.7 million for athletic fields and facilities improvements in a referendum last October.
