Selectmen Vote To Back Preservation of Coogan Farm
The Trust for Public Land and the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center are trying to obtain an open space grant
The Stonington Board of Selectmen have voted to support the efforts of The Trust for Public Land and the to secure an open space grant to preserve Coogan Farm, The Westerly Sun reported.
According to the article, the selectmen voted unanimously to back the initiative, which would protect a 34-acre tract of the Mystic property.

The Trust for Public Land's project manager Kate Brown told The Westerly Sun that the grant could provide between $300,000 and $500,000.
The article notes that the selectmen wrote in a letter that the property is a habitat for species such as the blue-winged warbler and the American kestrel, as well as a protector of the nearby watersheds.

“The property provides the scenic backdrop to historic Mystic, and is critical to maintaining the character of Mystic that attracts many visitors and Connecticut residents to the area," the selectman said in the letter, cited by The Westerly Sun.
"The public will have access to the land and its trails, which will provide connections to other open space and attractions in Mystic."
