A Grand Old Ceremony At Deans Mill School For The Stars And Stripes

The 23rd annual Flag Day ceremony did not disappoint!

By Ellyn Santiago

As end-of-the-year school events go there may be no more awesome one in Stonington than the annual Flag Day ceremony at Deans Mill School. This is the 23rd consecutive year of the ceremony where students, staff, family and dignitaries celebrate the stars and stripes.

Monday morning, under a stunning blue sky, the Flag Day celebration (postponed from Friday due to rain) saw the Presentation of Colors from Cub Scout pack 37 Webelos II Den of Stonington, an all-sing of ‘This land Is You Land,’ an in-unison Pledge of Allegiance and the Star-Spangled Banner sung Mystic Middle School 8th grader Jane Coates.

Student authors shared their flag poetry and essays -- Emily Stamm, Leo Fowler, Catherine Statchen, Emory Anderson, Carly Constantine, Jacob Bundesman, Skylynn Turman, Ben Young, Adele Howard and Nate Cote.

The Mystic Middle School fifth-grade band, directed by James Hilbie, performed the 1812 Overture and the Flag Day address was delivered by WWII veteran Richard Schauffhauser.

The ribbon routine by the fourth grade was followed by ‘Taps’ played by Ryan Kilcoyne on trumpet and the Webelos retired the colors.
