It might just be a few days into second half of the 2012-2013 academic year but the Stonington Board of Education is already focusing on the next academic year.

The board meets tonight, Jan. 10, 2013 at 7 p.m., in the Stonington High School Commons. Tonight’s agenda includes a discussion and possible vote on the 2013-2014 calendar and a presentation by Superintendent Van Riley of his budget proposal for the upcoming school year.

Riley presented the board with three proposals for the school calendar. All three proposals, according to the Board of Education blog, match the regional calendar, include a week vacation in April and a long weekend for President’s Day. Here are the three proposals:

  1. School opens on Aug. 28 and ends on June 11, with possible weather/make-up days from June 12 through June 26.
  2. School opens on Aug. 28 and ends on June 13. Two snow/make-up days are scheduled within the calendar (one following April vacation and one on the Tuesday after Memorial Day). School will be closed on those days unless a make-up day is needed.
  3. School opens on Sept. 3 and closes June 16. Possible snow/make-up days are scheduled June 17 through June 27.

While Riley is expected to present his proposed budget for the 2013-2014 school year, the board is not expected to approve the budget until its February 14, 2013 meeting.

According to the Board of Education blog a public forum on the school budget is scheduled for February 7, 2013.

At a said this year’s budget on the school level will look different in how it is structured and presented from previous years. Riley said the tradition of funding on the school level instead of a district level would also change.
