Connecticut Public School students will learn about the during the 2013-2014 school year.
State and local officials, including Governor Dannel P. Malloy, state Sen. Andrew Maynard (D-Stonington), and President Stephen White, declared the 2013-2014 academic year the "Year of the Charles W. Morgan," Wednesday.
According to a press release the "'Year of the Charles W. Morgan' will afford students across the state a unique opportunity to learn about Connecticut’s past, the historic significance of the whaling industry, and the state’s ongoing maritime tradition.”
The wooden whaleship, which first set sail in 1841, is the last of its kind in the world. Currently, the ship is at the Mystic Seaport. Upon completion of the restoration the ship will begin a 2014 summer tour of historic ports throughout the Northeast.
