In the 16th century, its meaning came to include the
firing process used for Japanese tea bowls.

Course description and objective

This course is intended to broaden the
students' understanding of clay as a viable medium for personal visual
expression.  While experiencing a new
material, students will create vessels using hand building techniques such as
pinch and coil methods. Students will learn about and participate in glazing
and Raku firing. 

Method
of presentation and participation

Lecture and examples of Japanese Tea Bowls and the origin and development of Raku Firing. Hand building demonstration- wedging clay, pinch and coil methods.
