School Board To Meet About Possible Changes To Calendar

The Stonington Board of Education meets tonight, Nov. 8, 2012, at 7 p.m. in the Stonington High School Commons

With a week of school cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy the Stonington School Board will have to find a way for students to make up several missed days of schools. At tonight’s regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting the school board plans to discuss and possibly vote on changes to the school calendar.

Stonington Public School students already made up one day by attending school on Election Day, Nov. 6, 2012. That leaves four days students need to make up. According to the Stonington Board of Education Blog, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Van Riley is recommending the following adjustments to the calendar:

  • Eliminate the planned holiday on Feb. 19 (A three-day vacation weekend for President’s Day would remain.)
  • Eliminate the staff development day on March 28. (A three-day weekend that includes Good Friday would remain.)
  • Extend the end of the school year by two days: June 13 and June 14. This would shift the early dismissal day from June 12 to June 14.
  • Schedule staff development days on June 17 and June 18.
  • Shift the elementary conference day from Nov. 1 to Nov. 15.

According to the blog post Riley made the recommendations based on five criteria including the “…recognition that early notice of possible calendar changes is best.”
