Henry learned to read and write in his 90s and he published his first book, "In a Fisherman’s Language," at age 98. Henry wanted to share the moment of special recognition with the .

“I’ve heard of great inspirations but you are on top of the list ,” wrote Sasha Oakes in a letter to Henry. “You’ve inspired me and soon a lot of people to keep on doing amazing things.”

Henry wasn’t given the opportunity to learn how to read and write because he was taken out of school at a young age by his father who needed him to work.

“I always wanted to learn to read and write,” he said. “I used to cry because I wanted to go to school, I never had the opportunity to learn.”

Henry was inspired to learn after hearing of George Dawson, author of “Life is so Good,” who also learned to read and write in his 90s.

“He calls him Georgie,” said Henry’s grand-daughter Marisa McLaughlin of Pawcatuck. “He has read the book so many times, he feels like he knows the guy.”

Along with students, faculty and staff of all grades, Henry was greeted State Sens. Edith Prague, D-19 and Andrew Maynard, D-18 and State Reps. Elissa Wright, D-41 and Diana Urban, D-43. Congressman Joe Courtney, D-2nd District read the letter, which was signed by President Barak Obama, aloud to the people assembled.

“You’re remarkable story reminds us that it is never too late to take on new challenges and master new skills,” wrote Obama in the letter.

Henry said he has begun a second book and his favorite books so far are “Life is so Good” by Richard Glaubman and George Dawson, “Daily Word For Healing” by Colleen Zuck and, Healthy at 100 by John Robbins.

“I love reading,” he said. “I know I’m doing better all the time.”

While I'm all for the values that the Ten Commandments gives us, I also don't want to be defenselessRead More because someone who chooses not to follow them is putting my life in danger. The Right to Bear Arms was created by men, for the purpose of the people of this country having a means to defend ourselves from people who mean us harm, or from a government who might seek to take away our arms for nefarious purposes. A very great man once said, "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend with my life your right to say it." Just out of curiosity, if someone were to invade your home, and attack you and your family, putting your lives in danger, what would you be willing to do to defend your lives?

Who gave us this right to bear arms? Men. The only God given law was the Ten Commandments. One ofRead More them explicitly says "Thou shall not kill."

I agree. The bottom line is we're all defenseless if we are deprived of our right to bear arms. GunRead More restrictions do nothing to prevent criminals from getting and using guns. They simply impede law-abiding citizens from getting and using them to defend ourselves from the criminals. I don't want to be stuck at a gunfight with nothing more than a cell phone camera.
