Palmer Field has seen a thousand cleats. And baseballs it turns out.

Ground was broken earlier this month on the $1,066,219 artificial turf project for the Stonington High School football field.

Workers were out early Tuesday morning ripping up the old field to make way for the new one, expected to be done Aug. 1, in time for Bears football season. (Go Bears!)

According to project manager Jim Doherty from R.A.D. Sports, topsoil has been removed from the football/soccer field to the town storage area. Demolition of existing asphalt paving is complete, including saw-cutting the edge of the existing track. Channel drain installation started Tuesday and will continue for the balance of the week. All materials have been delivered to site.

The Class of 2013 will have commencement at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy this June because of the construction.
