Happy Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is a special, romantic day. It's the one day of the year where "love" is required, or at least "like", romance is a must. Shower that someone special with admiration.

Valentine’s Day represents a day of love, emotions and caring. We buy Valentine cards, write love letters, give flowers, usually expensive red roses, buy a piece of jewelry and take our wonderful gorgeous Valentine to an expensive dinner.

Instead of a pleasant day of love, it can turn into an expensive event. That special card can cost $5.00, that dozen roses can cost $50.00, forget the price of the jewelry and dinners. It can turn into a $200 or $300 dollar day or more. Wow!

When we were young and in school everyone got excited about Valentine’s day, especially the girls. The boys and girls traded Valentine cards. The guys weren’t so hot about it. I had to give Valentine cards to girls I sometimes didn’t even like. It was fun to receive them though. At the end of the day, it wasn’t who sent them, it was how many did I get? If you got a whole bunch, you were very popular, if not you felt embarrassed to have sent so many out yourself.

Who remembers the Sadie Hawkins Dances? This was a dance where the girls got to ask the boys to go to the dance. You would be kind of keen on a certain girl, then she’d ask someone else to the dance. I remember being asked a couple of times, sometimes not the most popular girl, other times I got lucky. Those who weren’t the most popular or best looking were sometimes more fun.

It still can be fun, unless you forget the date, and don’t even remember a card. This can result in a trip to the proverbial doghouse.

From a male point of view, buying a gift has to be thoughtful and represent your love and devotion to your someone special. Candy is usually safe, the larger the box, the more you love her, not a good idea if she is diabetic. A nice bottle of wine is also good, find out what she prefers, white or red, what brand, again, if she is underage, don’t go there! I don’t like to go to Victoria’s Secret it’s embarrassing to me. Picking through all those silky things and having absolutely no idea what she would wear or what color would be best for her. Besides what I would want to see her in may not be what she wants. I steer clear of Victoria’s Secret.

Flowers are a great gift, unless she has an allergy to flowers. Roses are best, but, carnations can be excellent and a lot less expensive.

Dinner at McDonald’s or Applebee’s is in poor taste. During the winter months some of the nicest places are looking for customers, they may have specials because it’s slow. Easy to get a table. Don’t take her to a fish restaurant if she likes steak!

Jewelry is another super choice. Again, be careful, if you are only dating, do not buy a ring, she may get the wrong idea and think you’re engaged. Been there did that. Taboo. An engraved ankle bracelet is nice and thoughtful.

Whatever you decide to do, make it a wonderful romantic evening, shower her with attention and have fun. Tell her how much you love her, and don’t forget to ask her to be your Valentine, even If it’s only for the one night.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
